Reimagining wealth management

Designed an intuitive and personalized wealth management dashboard for HSBC

Overview

Role: Product Designer

  • Redesigned HSBC's legacy wealth management platform from the ground up while ensuring adaptability for other countries.

  • Led the design of a new wealth portfolio analysis feature for Mass Affluent customers, streamlining access to vital insights for timely investment decisions.

Results

  • 3x Increase in Daily Active Users (from 2K to 6K in 3 months)

  • 15% increased sign-ups for the premium account option

Why was the revamp necessary?

  • Main user base (45-65 year olds) was tech-averse and found the legacy platform unusable.

  • Three pain points:

    1. Cluttered interface: Users couldn't find a simple answer to their core question: "What is my portfolio net worth?"

    2. Hidden details: In-depth portfolio analysis was impossible, hiding critical data on asset distribution.

    3. High-friction support: Simple investment questions required a slow, manual process to book an appointment with a Relationship Manager (RM).

  • Solutions:

    • Prioritize clarity with a 'net worth' dashboard: I designed a new landing page focused on a single, clear answer to the user's primary question. This immediately provided value and reduced information overload.

    • Enable deeper analysis: For power users, I designed a dedicated 'Holdings' page that allowed for in-depth analysis of specific asset types, directly addressing a key user request.

    • Empower self-Service: To reduce reliance on RMs, I designed a new wealth analysis feature that provided on-demand portfolio insights—a service that was previously only available via appointment.

Learnings

  • Balance vision with a scoped MVP: I believe in starting with a big, user-centric vision but having the discipline to ship a tightly-scoped MVP that delivers immediate value.

  • Bridge design & engineering: I learned that a clear, comprehensive design spec is the most critical tool for a seamless collaboration, reducing ambiguity and accelerating the development timeline.
